Johnny Pesky, a baseball legend here in New England, passed away yesterday at the tender age of 92.
Even though his playing days ended before I was born, I am still a fan. Anyone familiar with Fenway Park knows that the right field foul pole is called the "Pesky Pole." He was associated with the Boston Red Sox organization right up until his death.
Bill Nowlin wrote a book (published in 2004) called Mr. Red Sox: The Johnny Pesky Story. Lew attended a Portland Sea Dogs game one night, and who should be there -- signing copies of his biography -- but Johnny Pesky himself!
When Lew arrived home from the game that night, he presented me with an autographed copy of Mr. Red Sox. :)
Thanks for the memories, Johnny Pesky! Rest in peace.
