A Belated Happy New Year!

I haven't completely abandoned this blog yet, but my posts are by no means prolific.  Maybe I can do a better job in 2026... but that's if I have something to say, haha!

Something I have kept up with is posting the books I've read (click on Reading Lists on the right-hand side).  It contains links to my annual reading lists starting with 2015! I just added the link for 2026, which already has a couple entries.

Peace and joy to you all!

And the Heat Goes On

We have had to sleep with the air conditioners running the past few nights. Hot, hot, hot... for us anyway. Sitting in my recliner with a good book would be a delightful way to survive the mid-day heat. This is as opposed to getting some tasks done at my desk like I am doing now. I'm almost done, though, then I can return to the good book.

Today is my mother's birthday. She would have been 86, which my weather app says is the high temperature for today.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Mom! 💕

Miscellanea

I just googled the plural of "miscellaneous" so I hope the title of this post is the correct usage.

Lew and I watched the final round of the Women's College World Series last week. Congratulations to Oklahoma on the FOUR-peat! Over the course of four years, the seniors played 250 games together. They lost only 15 of those games, they were never run-ruled, and they were never shut out... not to mention the four national championship titles. What a great softball squad!

I did some much-needed organizing/cleaning on Friday. I still have lots more to do, but I'm tired. Plus it will still be here later, LOL!

Dad will write more about this on Wednesday, but he DID go yesterday. The weather cooperated after all.

The weather today... well... it's raining. It must have rained really hard at some point during our church service; we could hear it pounding on the roof for several minutes.

I've been reading some interesting novels. (What about you?)

We finally went for pie & fry (Bill's Pizza and Pier Fries) with some friends last week. We followed up our fine dining experience with delicious ice cream treats at Fielder's Choice.

Now I'm off to have some lunch!

How I Spent My Birthday (and the Next Two Days)

I was a complete sloth for three days. All I did from Wednesday through Friday was sleep, read, eat, and watch stuff on TV.

I did go visit a friend yesterday morning, so I guess I should remove the word "complete" from the first sentence of this post.

I am paying for my slothfulness today. I dealt with the mail piled up on my desk, used the elliptical machine, took a shower, and I am currently doing laundry.

I will close this post with a photo of my birthday cake. It was chocolate. The frosting was sickeningly sweet... just the way I like it. Yum!

A Productive Day Watching Sports

TODAY:  Two NFL wildcard games. But — more importantly — two Rockets basketball games.

Zach's team played in a holiday tournament today in Sterling, Illinois. Dad and I watched both games — via streaming, of course!

The Rockets dropped their first game to a highly ranked team from Chicago. They trailed most of their second game but managed to get things even in the fourth quarter. The Rockets were ahead by one point with 2.9 seconds to go. Their opponent was inbounding the ball under their own basket. They got the ball to the top of the key... a shot goes up... and it doesn't go in! The Rockets win!

For the record, I did more than just watch sports today. I did some reading, used the elliptical machine, took a shower, and wrote this blog post.

A No-Frills Friday

Today was a "stay in PJs" day. I wasn't planning to go anywhere, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. 😃

I did manage to accomplish quite a bit while wearing my PJs. I installed TurboTax 2023 on my computer, thus I'm all set to do taxes when the time comes. I did quite a bit of reading. And tonight Dad and I watched Zach's basketball game online. The Rockets came up short, but they get to play again tomorrow night. We'll be watching!

Additional plans for tomorrow: Laundry, watch football, read, and prepare for all the snow we're supposed to get on Sunday.

I don't really do much to "prepare" for getting snow. But it is fun to see all of the hype in the local news!

Blogging 2023 Numbers

I did a very poor job writing blog posts last year. There were only 148 posts, and nearly a third of those were written by my father.

However, I did keep my 2023 Reading List current (sort of). I made 90 entries!

I hope to post more regularly in 2024. And, of course, I hope to read just as much.

I feel pretty good about the reading goal.

Time will tell about writing more blot posts....  😁

Read a Book!

Every now and then I write a post about how I love to read.

I own many books that I still haven't read yet. There are piles of physical books sitting on the floor in our guest bedroom. I also have pages and pages and pages and pages of book titles on my Kindle.

Long-term readers of this blog know that I've been keeping track of the books I've read for a few years now. I even list them for your perusal. (See the links on the right-hand side of the page.)

You will notice that I've been reading a lot of books by three authors: Agatha Christie, O. Henry, and George MacDonald. This is because I am trying to read all of the works by these authors. It's taking a while!

Hey! Read a book!

Evening Energy

In this past Tuesday's post I mentioned the Grinch Rush drink my friend and I get at Aroma Joe's.  We both got one again tonight, and that's when I learned I had neglected to recognize an important ingredient... the "Rush" part... as in the Rush Energy Drink!

So now I am wondering if I am going to be awake all night! 👀

P.S. At least I may get lots of reading done.

Reading

I posted 95 entries on my 2022 Reading List. I want to average at least a book per week, so goal exceeded for 2022.

Since my 2023 Reading List already has two entries, I'm already ahead of the game for this year.

Go read a book!  😀

Reading

Every now and then I write about my love for reading. I don't recall mentioning it for a while, so I figured it was time to get another blog post out of it.  😁

After I finish reading a book or a short story, I add it to my Reading List page for the current year. My 2022 Reading List page is currently at 68 books/stories.  I hope to add many more by December 31st.

Read a book!

Happy Easter!

We had a nice Easter weekend.

Our church added a Saturday service last night, which Lew and I attended.  This enabled me to visit Mom this morning. I read the resurrection account from all four gospels to her! She loved it.

Then we had a noon meal at sister Debbie's. Zack made a surprise trip home from college, so it was fun to see him. Josh is still around, too, which is nice. (His next ship assignment begins in mid-May.)

The rest of the afternoon/evening was spent reading, watching sports, and there may have even been a few minutes of dozing off.

HE IS RISEN!

HE IS RISEN INDEED!

Vital Visits and Big Books

The days are blending together. When asked how things are going, my answer is usually, "We're in a holding pattern." And I mean that in a good way.

I continue to visit Mom in the early afternoon each day. (Exceptions are illness or bad road conditions due to weather.) These daily visits consist of her drinking the Ensure I bring, my reading the Bible to her (a Psalm plus a passage from a Gospel), playing the pop-the-bubble game, and a puzzle or two. Several days a week we also video chat with Kim, who is joined quite often by Joe, Kaelen, and Cocoa! The daily visits from me and Dad have really made a difference for Mom. I'm so glad the shut-down is behind us,

I've had some what I call "big books" to read for quite a while. So a couple weeks ago I started setting weekly goals to try to get these books read; usually a chapter a week. I then break it down into daily weekday goals. I reserve the weekends for catching up. I currently am concentrating on two "big books." I just started week three and I'm sticking with it so far.

In addition to the "big books" I am fitting in some regular-length books. Yes, I really like to read!

Precipitation Predictions Pan Out

Yep... it was a yucky day weatherwise. Lew made yummy frosted cinnamon buns (from a can) this morning. Then I read for much of the day.

I'm trying to get a few productive things done in the next several minutes, then it will be time to watch nephew-in-law Zach's basketball team play. Zach is the head coach. Thanks to modern technology, we've been able to watch most of his games via live-streaming.

 GO ROCKETS!

R&R Weekend

Dad has been behaving! He is doing a good job staying off of his feet. Hopefully his toe (or lack thereof) will look marvelous when he has his follow-up appointment.

Lew and I had a brief window-visit with Mom this afternoon. Lew filled the birdfeeders outside her window while she and I blew kisses at each other. I think I woke her up from her nap, but she is always glad to see us. Dad hasn't been able to visit for a few days (toe), but she seems to understand why.

Other than doing laundry and catching up on my bills, I am intentionally having a weekend of R&R. For me that means organizing my LEGO collection, watching some programs, and reading. Zack's football team doesn't play this weekend, so I will probably watch a little bit of March Madness to scratch my sports itch.

A beautiful day today. I love Spring. 😊

A Day Off... Sort Of

Last week I made plans to take today off from work. I had a 7:00 appointment this morning to have blood-work done (in anticipation of next week's routine check-up), and I decided it would be a good day to get other personal things done.

Lew drove me to my early morning appointment, after which we went to IHOP for breakfast. We got home around 8:15ish, and I got working on the paperwork/phone calls I had planned to complete. I finished all of that by 1:00 p.m.... Phew!

After lunch, Dad and I went up to see Mom. He was able to schedule a half-hour inside visit today (still with masks, partitions, supervision, etc.), and two visitors are allowed. So I took advantage of the opportunity. It was nice to be able to talk with Mom without having to stand outside in the cold!

I did a few more organizing-type things when we got home, and then I splurged by finishing a novel I had started reading a few days ago. It was a good way to wind down from the busy morning I'd had.

I enjoyed the break from my regular weekday routine. Back to work tomorrow!

I'm Still Here: Part IV

The good news:  I think I finally have fully recovered from my minor concussion.

The bad news:  I am approximately 3,650 days behind at work.... That is a bit of an exaggeration, but it feels like the truth. It really could take me a full 10 years to catch up! Everyone else is feeling the same way, though, so at least I'm not alone. This week we are supposed to get some snow. I'm going to bring my work laptop home every night, just in case.

In other news, Lew and I are going to declutter. I think we just did that a couple years ago, so either we didn't do a very good job then or we have "RE-cluttered." Probably a little bit of both.

January is now over and I haven't added anything to my "2021 Reading List" page yet. But I have finished one book, so I'll try to update the page soon. I also have four other books going; it takes a while to finish a book when reading so many simultaneously! And my "Want to Read" list continues to grow and grow and grow.... 📚

Here's to getting February off to a good start tomorrow!

Still Recovering

Stayed up too late Tuesday night to watch the sparring match... er, the debate.

After the debate was over, it took quite a long time for me to go to sleep. Too much excitement, I guess.

When I am having trouble falling asleep, I read on my Kindle until my eyes start to slam shut. It usually works fairly quickly, but it didn't on Tuesday! Again, too much excitement.

Since I rarely remember what I've read right before falling asleep, I need to go back a few pages the next time I return to a book. It's a necessary hazard of my strategy.

Speaking of eyes starting to slam shut....

Good night!

Hooray for Long Weekends

I have a three-day weekend because of the Labor Day holiday on Monday.

I plan to do the three Rs:

  • Reading. Hopefully lots of reading. Maybe an Agatha Christie mystery.
  • Writing. I'm going to write a letter to send to lawmakers. Time to open the nursing homes back up for family to visit. Enough is enough.
  • Arithmetic. Pay a few bills and get my checkbook caught up.

Actually I'm going to do the five Rs... the three above and some much-needed R&R!

Reset, Day 3

This will probably be my last post with "Reset, Day #" as the title. But I did want to do this particular post to list some of the other aspects of my "Reset."

My niece Kaelen and I decided to start learning Greek. We are using Duolingo and a beginner's Greek book, and we both now have a Greek New Testament. Looking forward to when we are able to read portions of it!

Although I have piles of books I want to read (physical piles and virtual piles), I do have a list I started a while back that I am trying to get through. There are currently 21 books on this list. Going to tackle them in earnest.

Trying to stop and wave at Mom through her window on my way home from work every day. We wave and blow kisses at each other, It is a nice few minutes.

I got behind on my devotional books during the pandemic. (Yes, I know the pandemic is still going on, but I'm doing a "Reset" on how I'm coping with it.)  I am all caught up now, and I aim to stay caught up. It's good for my soul.

One other thing I need to do is get to sleep earlier. I haven't done so great at that yet, as you can see by the timestamp of this post! So....

Good night!
