Remembering Mom

We had a lovely time last night as our family dined on brisket, corn on the cob, bread, watermelon, cookies, and chips 'n dip. (I may be missing something.) The meat and the corn came all the way from Illinois. Yum!

In attendance were Dad, Lew & I, Kim & Joe, Kaelen, Kelsey & Zach, Bode, Boston, Debbie & Glen, and Zack. We were short one member because Josh is working his 90-day shift on the ship. (We missed you, Josh!)

After the meal we had a brief time of remembering my mother.

Kelsey and Kaelen led by reading the obituary. I then read Mom & Dad's wedding invitation, after which I shared the Bible passage Mom and I often read together.  Said passage was Genesis 1, with Mom providing "good" after I read "and God saw that it was..." — my family performed Mom's part last night. I told everyone they were on Mom's heart until the end as I sang to her, "He's got Mary Lou's family in His hands."

After I finished the "planned" portion of the evening, the rest of the family shared (mostly funny!) stories about Mom. It was a nice time of remembrance.

We will always miss her.

Bible Reading

I read the Bible to my mother just about every day.

Today I asked her if there was a favorite story she would like me to read.  

Her response was, "All of it."

So we started at the very beginning.  ("A very good place to start" as the Do-Re-Mi song explains.)

Tomorrow we'll move on to Genesis Chapter 2.

A Good Decision

Today, June 24, 2022, is a historic day!

I haven't read the complete SCOTUS opinion, but I have bookmarked it.  The PDF file is 213 pages, so it will take a while to read.

I am praying for all of the life-affirming pregnancy centers. They have helped so many women and will continue to do so.  Protect them, Lord, and honor their work!  (I was on the board for our local center for eight years.)

Happy Easter!

We had a nice Easter weekend.

Our church added a Saturday service last night, which Lew and I attended.  This enabled me to visit Mom this morning. I read the resurrection account from all four gospels to her! She loved it.

Then we had a noon meal at sister Debbie's. Zack made a surprise trip home from college, so it was fun to see him. Josh is still around, too, which is nice. (His next ship assignment begins in mid-May.)

The rest of the afternoon/evening was spent reading, watching sports, and there may have even been a few minutes of dozing off.

Bloggy Break

I know I have ignored my blog since Dad's post on Wednesday. I hadn't been feeling that great all week, so I went to the doctor on Thursday and was diagnosed with a viral sinus infection. It's been an annoying little bugger! I won't be going back to work until the 30th, but fortunately I can work from home when I feel up to it.

Rest, fluids, saline nasal spray, ibuprofen.... My current daily life in a nutshell.

Next post will probably be Dad's on Wednesday.

Hope

I woke up today to the news of what happened in Las Vegas.

The words that came to mind:  senseless, incomprehensible, tragic, sad, horrific, terrible, etc.

But words are inadequate.... Well, my words are anyway.

So I will end this post with a promise from the only One who gives us hope. Found in Isaiah 49 (ESV):

"I will not forget you.

Weekend Plans

Lew and I have a couple social events planned for tomorrow. In the morning we are meeting up with our breakfast buddies. In the evening our neighbors are coming over for a spaghetti dinner.

On Sunday I am teaching children's church. The lesson is called "The Angel's Message." It is based on Luke 1:26-38,46-56. (I guess we aren't quite out of the Christmas theme yet!)

Laundry and other household chores are also on tap for the weekend.

Oh... and I plan on watching the Patriots WIN tomorrow night.... Did you hear me, Mr. Brady? Please don't let me down!

A Blue Monday

Stayed home from work today:

Didn't sleep well due to my restless leg. I had been trying Lew's apple cider vinegar cure-all, but it doesn't work for my leg as well as 1/2 cup of tonic water before bedtime. So back to the tonic water it is.

Also fighting the start of a cold. I drank two cups of Gypsy Cold Care Tea this morning, and most of the symptoms have gone away. More fluids and an early bedtime tonight may give me victory.

Feeling lousy physically often makes me feel "blah" mentally and emotionally. So after feeling sorry for myself this morning, I've picked up my game a bit for the afternoon. So hopefully my "Blue Monday" will not stretch into Tuesday....

I don't think it will, because I'm wearing my red pants tomorrow. Plus, there's this — especially this:

There Is a Master Knitter

Tonight Lew and I will be attending the annual community awareness and fundraiser banquet for our local crisis pregnancy center.  I was on the board of directors at ABBA, A Women's Resource Center for eight years and this is a ministry that Lew and I continue to support.

ABBA is part of the Care Net network of crisis pregnancy centers. Today I encourage you to find a Care Net center near you and get involved!

Good Friday: Read All About It

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"

6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!"

But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

7 The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."

8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"

11 Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar."

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour.

"Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!"

"Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked.

"We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others–one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews."

22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 "Let’s not tear it," they said to one another. "Let’s decide by lot who will get it."

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said,

"They divided my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothing."

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus

28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," 37 and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."

The Burial of Jesus

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Don't Miss the Miracle

I'm not using a writing prompt today, but I'm still going to limit myself to five minutes!
 
I want to share one more thing from the women's pilgrimage.
 
One of the practices we encountered was "imaginative prayer." To get a sense for what this means, we used an application (free!) called "Pray as You Go". The application has a section called "Imaginative Contemplation Exercises". We listened to the story of Jesus and Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52).
 
During the exercise, I imagined myself as one of the disciples. Given my nature, I began to think about where we (Jesus and the other disciples) were headed next. I was so intent on helping Jesus stick to the schedule, the next thing I knew Bartimaeus had already been healed of his blindness. And I had missed it....
 
I had missed the miracle.
 
What God told me that night:
Slow down.
Pay attention to what He is doing.
Pay attention to the needs of others.
Don't miss the miracle!

The Mini-Pilgrimage

The mini-pilgrimage was today!

This was a two-hour event at our church sponsored by women's ministries. Abbie (my amazing co-leader this morning) and I had 10 young girls in attendance. The youngest girl there was almost five years old and the oldest was a freshman in high school. We had each of the older girls "buddy" with a younger girl, which helped out a lot.

We talked about three spiritual practices that help us grow closer to God (lectio divina, praying with imagination, and taking prayer walks), had a snack, and then decorated shoes to use as props for the women's pilgrimage next weekend.

I believe that the girls all had a good time and might even remember some of the things we talked about.  :)

As for me: If I have a muscle, then that muscle is sore. If I have a moving joint, then that joint is creaking. If I have two eyes, then those eyes are slamming shut.

I love my little friends, but they have tons more energy than I do. TONS!

And although I am weary, I LOVED my time with Abbie and the girls this morning. We may even do it again.  :)

Be Careful, My Little Mind

Writing Prompt: Bedtime stories.
 
I don't remember whether I had bedtime stories as a child. (Did I, Mom?)
 
I have learned over the years to take care with pre-bedtime entertainment. If a movie, program, book is too unsettling, then I will lie awake for several hours. It's not good to have your mind dwelling on unsettling things.
 
If we should watch a movie on the weekend that gets to be a little too much, then we will do the entertainment version of "cleansing the palate" by watching a fun show - for example, an episode of "Frasier."
 
Lew and I have our devotion time (Bible reading and prayer) together at night, so that is a nice way to calm our hearts and minds. Then we both will read something enjoyable. I usually read until I can't keep my eyes open; this phenomena is usually accompanied by not comprehending the prior page or two! Then I fall asleep fairly easily.
 
I think I may read a bit right now. And it's not even bedtime!

A Haircut, Baseball, a Blog Post, and a Certain Kitty

After experiencing a few days of rain, we are having a beautiful Saturday. It was warm enough at noon for Lew and I to go outside on the deck so that I could cut his hair. (There is always lots of excitement around here, let me tell you!)

Have I mentioned before that Saturday is now laundry day? Well it is indeed laundry day. (More excitement.)

The World Series began Tuesday night. I am rooting for the Royals, but I am not going to be devastated if they lose. They are ahead in the series at this point, 2-1, so they have a good shot at it. (It is nice that my stomach is free from the gymnastics of last year. You may recall that my beloved Red Sox played in -- and won! -- the 2013 World Series. My stomach did somersaults while watching those games.)

On Wednesday I wrote a blog post for my church's women's ministry blog. I shared my goal of memorizing the entire book of Ephesians. You can read the post by clicking *HERE*.

Kurt the cat has resumed peeing on the living room carpet. I'm going to call the vet to make sure he doesn't have an infection. He seems in pretty good spirits, so I'm thinking he's fine. But we are wondering if he's mad that I'm out of the house more than I used to be. Sorry, kitty. Anyway, Kurt is fortunate that we love him and are willing to replace the flooring in our living room if it comes to that. (Lew and I were just talking about how having cats complicates our lives a bit. But it's also a lot more fun with them around.)

Remembered This!

When Pastor Dave asked if anyone had memorized Ephesians 2:4,5,&10, I slowly raised my hand. I didn't bring attention to myself, because I knew what was in store. Lew, however, had his hand way up in the air, pointing at me. (Thanks, Lew....)

After a short and humorous exchange with Pastor Dave in front of the entire congregation, I successfully recited Ephesians 2:1-10 with only one prompt from Lew. Pastor Dave rewarded me with some honey sticks. (See Psalm 119:103).

Now, on to the Sermon on the Mount!

Remember This, Remember This, Remember This....

(I'm trying to have all of the below memorized by Sunday, so gotta run!)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. Remember This

Pastor Dave's message today was about Scripture memorization.

I love the Bible, and I agree that we should commit big chunks of it to memory.

Several months ago I decided to memorize the Sermon on the Mount. I got off to a good start with the aid of a great app called Scripture Typer.

I never finished. Memorizing is indeed hard work, but I'm disappointed that I didn't stick with it.

Pastor Dave gave us a challenge for this coming week, so I'm going to memorize Ephesians 2:1-10. I think I can manage that.

And if I'm successful, I'll try to tackle the Sermon on the Mount again.

Let's do this!

Life's Mixed Emotions

We wrapped up our weekend yard sale today.

Toward the end of the sale, I met a young man who became a first-time father yesterday. The baby boy was born eight weeks early, so he will be in the hospital for a while. Baby Michael is breathing on his own and doing great, considering his early arrival. And he is already very much loved by his daddy! (And by his mommy, too, I imagine.)

I just learned that a sweet friend and her husband lost their beautiful 23-year-old daughter yesterday. My heart is aching for them. Words can't describe their pain. Lew and I are praying that God will grant them the peace and comfort that only He can bring.

Yesterday . . . a new life . . . a lost life.
